Who pays me, how affiliate links work on this site, and what that does and doesn't change.

What an affiliate link is

An affiliate link is a normal link with a tracking code added to it. When you click one and buy hosting, the host can see that you came from my site, and it pays me a share of the sale.

Most hosting programs pay once for each new customer. A few pay a small amount every month for as long as the customer stays.

Which hosts pay me

I am in the affiliate programs of these hosting companies. Some of them run through the CJ Affiliate network, and the others through the host’s own program.

  • Through CJ Affiliate: GoDaddy, Hostinger, InterServer, Namecheap, HostPapa, eUKhost and Easyspace
  • Through the host’s own program: Kamatera (also VPSServer and ClubVPS, through the same program), HostGator, Hawk Host, Hosting.com (formerly A2 Hosting), Cloudways and Thamara Cloud

Hosts that have paid me commission include Kamatera, InterServer and GoDaddy. This list changes over time, and I update this page when it does.

Does it cost you more?

No. The price at checkout is the host’s normal price. If a deal works only through my link, I say so on the page where it appears.

Does it change my reviews?

Rankings

No host can pay to move up a list. I don’t sell sponsored reviews or paid placements. Hosts that pay me nothing, like DigitalOcean and Oracle Cloud, appear on this site and can be my pick.

Scores and downsides

Every host goes through the same checks, whether it pays me or not. GoDaddy pays me commission, and my review still gives it 5.5 out of 10 and lists every downside I found. The full process is on my how I test page.

Free accounts

If a host ever gives me a free account for testing, I say so clearly at the top of that review.

How to spot an affiliate link

  • “Visit” and “Get” buttons next to a host’s name.
  • Links to a host’s sales page inside reviews, tables and deal lists. These links start with alexwebhosting.com/visit/.
  • In the page code, these links carry rel=”sponsored”.
  • Links to my own guides and other pages on this site are never affiliate links.

Ads on this site

This site doesn’t show display ads. The only income is the affiliate commission explained above.

Questions

I publish this page because you should know who pays me, and because advertising rules such as the US FTC’s Endorsement Guides ask for it. If something here isn’t clear, or you think a page crosses a line, write to me.

Who wrote this

Hi, I'm Alex

I sold hosting plans at a domain and hosting company for five years, starting in 2008. Since 2014 I've bought hosting for my own sites, and I started this site in 2017 to write about what happened.
